PACQUIAO BEATS CLOTTEY
Another victory to the Filipino boxing superstar, Manny “ Pacman “ Pacquiao, he is still the undisputed Welterweight Champion of the World.
Pacquiao punished Clottey with combinations to the body throughout in winning the unanimous decision to retain his World Boxing Organization welterweight title and his status as the world’s finest boxer.
Again, just like every fight, Pacquiao took advantage by using his blazing hand speed to rip through Clottey’s gloves and land hard, punishing shots.
According to CompuBox, Pacquiao outpunched Clottey 1,239 to 399 and outlanded him 246-108.
Here’s the complete details of the fight:
Judge 1: 120-108
Judge 2: 119-109
Judge 3: 119-109
Verdict: Pacquaio wins by unanimous decision
Round 12: Clottey bleeding from the nose as he comes out for the 12th and final round. Hug from the two fighters in centre ring – great to see. Both true sportsmen. Now they get back to the proper action and Clottey tries to come forward and does land with a left. Lovely left to the head from Pacquiao, ducking and weaving as he tries to load up for a final-round assault. Nice combination from Clottey but Manny hits back and again goes on the front foot. Astonishing conditioning from the P4P king – doesn’t even seem the slightest bit tired or winded. Into the final 30 seconds as Manny tries to put an exclamation mark on what surely will be his 51st professional victory. Pacquiao ends the night as he started it – attacking with Clottey on the ropes. Another Pacquiao round – a 120-108 shutout on my card. We’ll await the official verdict.
Round 11: The advice in Clottey’s corner is to “take a chance baby” but not much science involved from his seconds. Without his normal trainer tonight of course. Six minutes standing between Pacquiao and another dominant victory. Pacquiao again dominating the action. He’s hardly lost a round in the last two years. Pair of uppercuts from Clottey – showing great bravery. Followed by a right hand. Definitely at least having a bit of a go in this round. But it just serves to wake Manny up and he goes into top gear again. Left to the body, right to the head. Blazing hand speed. “Manny Manny” chants the Texas crowd. Uppercut and a left from Clottey. Knows he needs the knockout. Manny hits back with a flurry to the body. Lot of Manny’s punches being blocked, but he’s just dominating the fight again. Another round for the P4P king and a standing ovation from the 50,000 plus crowd.
Round 10: Out for the 10th and Clottey needs something pretty remarkable to win this one now. He’s shown great resilience and has landed a few decent rights. But every time he opens up the volume of shots coming back just causes him to tighten the guard once again. Clottey takes another big Pacquiao left – brave indeed. Pacquiao again attacking to the body. Clottey can’t even set himself, such is the speed with which Pacquiao operates. Lovely right hook from Pacquiao. Clottey trying to throw leather in return but nothing of any real consequence. Crowd getting behind Clottey a bit – at least he’s showing something in this round. Manny again blasting away to the body inside the final 20 seconds. Clottey on the ropes and now holding as the bell goes. Another Manny round. Shutout so far on my card.
Round 9: Clottey’s corner telling him how it is between rounds – he’s lost every session so far. Into the ninth – Freddie Roach predicted that this is where it will end. He’s normally pretty accurate but Clottey doesn’t look ready to go just yet. Manny on the offensive again. Jabbing well and then mixing in body shots and blazing combinations. Clottey lands a jab and then a combination. At last a bit of aggression from the man from Ghana. Another combination from Manny – hurling punches like a machine gun delivers bullets. Clottey on the ropes in the final 45 seconds. Manny definitely starting to put a dent in his defences. Another Manny round – 90-81 on my card and Clottey very obviously needs a knockout. Corner telling him the ref will stop it if he doesn’t throw more punches. Swelling under Manny’s right eye by the way.
Round 8: Pacquiao by the way a 1-20 shot with the bookmakers now as we go into the final five rounds. Manny going to the body – four shots to the rib cage of Clottey – but he just soaks it up again. Pacman gets a few seconds to recover from a low blow from Clottey. Better shots here from Manny – then a clash of heads but no damage. Five-punch combination from Pacquiao. Pretty one-sided in this round. Maybe the accumulation of shots is starting to have some sort of pay-off for Manny. Clottey just covering up – not really offering anything in return. Tried to land a left hook right at the end ofr the round. Jinkee Pacquiao now looks nervous ringside – but her man has won on every round on my card.
Round 7: Clottey told: “Come on, let’s take a chance” in his corner. Not sure that’s the wisest advice I’ve ever heard. At some stage yes, at this stage maybe not. Manny has definitely slowed in the last couple of rounds, maybe that’s intended though. There was a chance in the first four rounds – such was his intensity and workrate – that he’d punch himself out. Pacquiao goes on the attack midway through the round but Clottey again answers with a cracking right. Good burst from Manny – left to the head and then the body. But Clottey again just covering up on the ropes. Another Pacquiao round, but perhaps the best of the night for Clottey so far.
Round 6: Clottey not producing enough to win a round so far, but maybe the plan is to come on strong in the second half. Manny though didn’t appear to tire despite virtually going the distance against Cotto – what’s to say he will tonight? Good combination from Clottey as Pacquiao lays back on the ropes and invites his opponent to come forward. Manny back on the front foot but not putting as much in as he did in the first four rounds – when he was virtually non-stop aggression. Manny just waiting it would appear for Clottey to make a mistake. He hasn’t done yet. Manny again raises the pace in the final minute of the round to take it. Shutout so far in the first half of the fight for me.
Round 5: Pace slightly dropping early in the fifth. Manny’s workrate not quite as high. Wise move – if this one goes 12 he might have been a tad tired come the closing stages. Clottey comes forward with a good right again – good shot and one that’s been pretty accurate so far. No real effect on Pacquiao though, as yet. Manny now ups the pace but Clottey is taking a lot of his punches on the arms and on the gloves. Nice left from Clottey – Pacman on the back foot, almost inviting his opponent on. Blazing combination from Manny in the closing 10 seconds but again Clottey covers up. Difficult to know just how many of these are getting through. Definitely another Pacquiao round – 50-45 on my card.
Round 4: Into the fourth and Manny again putting n the work as Clottey implements what is starting to look like a pretty sound gameplan. Tight defence and occasional telling counters. More lateral movement in this round from Manny – perhaps in response to those rights from Clottey in the previous session. Lovely uppercut from Manny. Clottey on the ropes as Manny loads up. Good right and then more body shots – he’s thrown dozens and dozens already tonight. Another six or seven-punch combination from Manny – no idea how Compubox keeps up with him. Three-punch combination from Clottey. Again Manny’s round – 40-36 on my card – but Clottey still very much in there. By now Hatton had gone and Cotto and De La Hoya were both pretty much spent.
Round 3: Pacquiao worked non-stop in the first two sessions while Clottey didn’t. That could be a factor later on. Left from Pacquiao – Clottey answers with a right. Clottey always there for Manny, but with that peek-a-boo defence that’s not easy to breach. Manny whaling away but Clottey blocking a fair percentage of his shots. Nice right from Clottey – accurate and lands again. Pacquiao loads up – right to the head and then a sustained attack to the body. Two rights in response from Clottey though and this is turning into a decent scrap. Pacman definitely outworking his opponent but is his workrate and fusillade of punches denting the man from Ghana? Cracking round – another for Manny on my card but the best of the night so far for Clottey.
Round 2: Same gameplan from Clottey in the second, inching forward with a tight guard, trying to get close enough to Pacquiao to get his shots off. Manny always bouncing and lands a right and then a left to the body. Manny blasting away to the body while Clottey just maintains that peek-a-boo defence. Clearly the gameplan is to be strong in the second half of the fight. Doesn’t want to make the mistakes that Hatton and Cotto did early by getting hurt. Manny lands a solid left to the head and Clottey pretends to be wobbled. Did land though. Manny loading up to the body. Clottey tries to land with a right Manny again hits to the body with a right. Then a nice combination finished by a straight left. Manny’s round again – 20-18 for me.
Round 1: Final instructions out of the way from referee Rafael Ramos and we’re under way in this sensational venue with 51,000 fans packed inside. What does the Pacman have in store for us tonight? And can Clottey test the P4P king? All questions to be answered in the next 36 minutes – or maybe less. Clottey looks much bigger as you’d imagine, but so did Cotto, De La Hoya etc. Early attack from Manny, landing a left with Joshua on the ropes. Tight guard from Clottey. Pacquaio – as Freddie Roach said he would – going to the body early doors. Trying to weaken the man from Ghana and get him to drop that guard. Manny lands with a lightning counter which sees Clottey lurch off balance. Manny holding sway in the opener with that blazing hand speed. Manny’s round for me – working the jab and body shots to take it.
